Planning generator maintenance across multiple sites

Planning generator maintenance across multiple sites

Standby power only helps if it starts when it is needed. A practical approach to keeping generators ready across a network of sites.

For branches, offices and facilities that rely on standby power, a generator that fails to start is a business problem, not just a technical one. Managing maintenance across many sites adds coordination on top of the technical work. These are the building blocks of a dependable programme.

Start with an asset register

List every generator with its location, make, model, rating, age, run hours and the date of the last service. Note access arrangements and site contacts. Without a reliable register, schedules and budgets are guesswork.

Set a preventive schedule

Follow the manufacturer's service intervals, usually based on run hours and calendar time, whichever comes first. Typical preventive tasks include oil and filter changes, coolant and belt checks, battery condition, fuel quality and a test run under load where possible.

Do not forget batteries and fuel

Many start failures come from weak batteries or poor fuel. Include battery testing and terminal checks in every visit, and manage stored fuel so it does not degrade.

Group sites into clusters

Planning visits by geographic cluster reduces travel time and keeps technicians familiar with the equipment in their area. It also makes response arrangements for breakdowns clearer.

Agree response times and escalation

Define what happens when a generator fails: who is called, how quickly someone attends, and how temporary power is arranged if needed. Put this in the contract rather than relying on goodwill.

Report after every visit

A short visit report with readings, work done, parts used and recommendations builds a history for each unit. It helps plan replacements and supports budget decisions.
